Newsletter of the
Honeywell
Retiree Social Club of
Arizona
NOTE:
This online version is a
reformatted sub-set of the full version sent to
paid-up members, with
possible updates to event information since the Bridge
was distributed.
For example, it does not contain names
of recent
retirees, new members, or members who have passed
away, nor does it
contain the list of member email addresses which is
sent out from time
to time. The full
December edition of
the Bridge included a list of email
addresses for HRSC members.
Finally, there will typically be a
delay of a
week or so before a new month's version is posted
here; if you want to
get
the Bridge as it comes off the press, become
a member
and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge,
which is sent by
email. Note that the black-and-white
paper Bridge is sent out by Honeywell, who outsource
the task. It is
typically delivered about two weeks after the PDF
eBridge is delivered
by email, so apart from news being a little old,
members receiving only
the paper copy may miss out on first come, first
served signup for
upcoming events.

President's
Perspective
Welcome
back from wherever you’ve been this
summer! Hope everyone took a
great trip or vacation or simply had a great
summer at home with family
and friends.
I’m
looking
forward to this 2016/17 season as an opportunity
to develop a better
recruiting process for new members and new
officers. We’ll be
exploring this and will entertain any
suggestions we can get from our
body of members.
You
can be
proud that we are contributing a portion of your
dues for scholarships
at UofA, ASU, & NAU. Under the great
stewardship of Dawn
Orgill and her very capable group, the HRSC
Scholarship Foundation has
grown both with the amount of money they are
collecting and the number
of awards we are offering your family
members. Honeywell
Aerospace and the Garrett Retirees’ Club have
both stepped up and
increased their contributions. Gwen
Scheetz, our Treasurer for
the Foundation, accomplished an extraordinary
job of getting the
Foundation certified as a 501(c) 3 charitable
organization. That
means that any contributions you make to the
Foundation above the
annual dues amount, can be deducted from your
federal and state tax
income. I’m certain we will learn of
additional developments from
the organization as the year progresses.
Don’t
forget
... we’ll be having special events throughout
the year. Check the
schedule in this issue of the Bridge and come on
out – support your
club, renew old friendships and make new ones.
Your
Board
of Directors looks forward to serving you this
year. Let’s make
it a great one!
Ed
Taschner

SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM UPDATES
|
Congratulations
go to Rachael Davey (UoA), Lauren Eslinger (NAU),
Rebecca Grapentine
(ASU), Danielle Martinez (ASU), and Maureen van
Dobben (ASU) for
receiving a Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship
for this school year.
The Scholarship Foundation Board was delighted to
be able to award each
of these deserving students a Scholarship for
$1800 each. As you
know, that is an increase from the $1000 generally
awarded. The
Scholarship Foundation Board would like to join
these students in
sincerely thanking our many members who have
contributed to the
Scholarship Fund, and our generous sponsors
(Honeywell Inc.,
Garrett Retiree Club, and Honeywell Retiree Social
Club). These
scholarships wouldn’t be possible without
you. With the price of
Tuition continually rising, the increase in award
money was sincerely
appreciated by each of the students.
Look for more information about each of these
students, beginning next
month. We will feature a different student
each month and tell
you more about them, their goals and how they are
progressing through
their academic journey.
Don’t forget, if you have a child or grandchild
that is enrolled in
Arizona State University, Northern Arizona
University, or University of
Arizona, they may be eligible to apply for one of
the Scholarships this
coming year. Applications, dates, and
guidelines are available
from our website, www.hrcaz.org.
If you have questions about the
Scholarships, or suggestions for
how to improve our Scholarship process, please
contact one of the Board
members.
For more details of the program, see the SCHOLARSHIPS
section of the website. |

Day at the
Races
Tuesday
Feb
23, 2016
A perfect day in Arizona
for a
horse
race. Forty-one happy people wined and dined on
the unlimited buffet
and then tried their luck on the horses. Many
won, some lost, but all
were excited and had a great time. We had a race
named after the Club
and then had the opportunity to stand in the
winner's circle. The horse
was owned by the owner of Barro's Pizza and this
race was the first
time this horse won. If you made the right bet,
it paid $30 to win.
Hope to see everyone, and more, next year.

Southwest
Airlines Maintenance Facility Tour
Thursday - April 21,
2016
Nearly 40 retiree club members had a fascinating
tour of the Southwest
Airlines
maintenance hangar at Phoenix Sky Harbor
airport, conducted by the
enthusiastic maintenance supervisor, Kevin
Bowman. Interesting facts we
learned from him included:
- The original grungy Southwest aircraft
colors were created
by mixing odds and ends that Boeing had left
when Southwest did not
have the money to pay for a proper paint job
on their first few planes.
(At least, this is what we were told!)
- Southwest's fast turnaround expertise was
born of necessity
when, in the early days, they had to sell
one of their four planes for
financial reasons, but tickets had already
been sold assuming they had
the plane. By cutting turnarounds to ten
minutes, they were able to
continue operating their full service with
only three planes.
- When
Boeing changed their plans for a new model
of 737,
making the tail fin taller than they had
said it would be, the plane
would not fit into the Southwest maintenance
hangar at Sky Harbor. The
solution? A partial wheelie, using a jack
under the nosewheel!
We learned much more besides, and had the
opportunity to go right up to
the aircraft and inspect them at very close
quarters. We also saw some
of the maintenance workshops for items that are
repaired or serviced in
the hangar, including aircraft toilets.
Many thanks to Keith Hughes for arranging this
highly-recommended tour.
