Newsletter of the

Honeywell Retiree Social Club of Arizona

NOTE: This online version is a reformatted sub-set of the full version sent to paid-up members, with updates to event information since the Bridge was distributed.

For example, it does not contain names of recent retirees, new members, or members who have passed away, nor does it contain the list of member email addresses which is sent out from time to time.

There will typically be a delay of a week or so before a new month's version is posted hereā€”if you want to get the Bridge as it comes off the press, become a member and request the full-color PDF version, the eBridge, which is sent by email and can be received wherever you may be, unlike the paper version. Note that Honeywell outsources the distribution of the black-and-white paper Bridge. It is typically delivered one to two weeks after the PDF eBridge is delivered by email, so apart from news being a little old, members receiving only the paper copy may miss out on first come, first served signup for upcoming events.

President's Perspective

Mary Barkl

The Octoberfest was enjoyed by all.  Lots of good food and many take home boxes for a late dinner I suppose.  Leigh Dechaine provided our entertainment and was fabulous! He added some extra entertainment by teaching us some new songs which got the crowd going.  The area for lunch was set up so unique, like a very long family table, so there was no need for an Ice Breaker.  Friends were made quickly.  We had five door prize winners and two $27 winners who played 50/50.    Everyone went away satisfied.  The Edelweiss had a large pig outside behind the restaurant. No he was not next weekā€™s dinner, just a pet.  Pictures of the event have been provided in this monthā€™s Bridge.

The holiday luncheon event will take place at Arrowhead Country Club.  It is a buffet and will include many food choices.  Reservations are required so please call me by November 21st.   We have lots of room and many can come to enjoy friends, food, and frivolity.  There will be 50/25/25 and door prizes.  The details are provided in this monthā€™s Bridge.

Please see the section on our next volunteer event.  It is early in December and we will be working at the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Phoenix fixing up their diggings.  Give Doug a call and sign up as the company will be providing lunch and shirts.  We have jobs of all kinds so anyone can participate. Deadline is November 16.  LAST CHANCE!!!

We have some fall events which are detailed below, many sold out.  Reruns which have been requested the most, still popular.

We are starting a new section called ā€œKeep in Touchā€ which is designed to provide more personalized focus on members and what they are doing now. We had a couple of entries in the October Bridge that we hoped would peak your interest in participating. Please write the HRSC and let us know what is happening with you and yours.  We have had several requests for this section.  Got another hobby, went back to work, got more grandkids, your favorite volunteer event, moved away, moved back to Phoenix, etc. etc.

If any of you have burning questions or comments, feel free to call or write me.

PAPER OR ELECTRONIC?

Once again we would like to take this opportunity to encourage our members to switch from a paper Bridge to the electronic version of the Bridge. In September, it took three weeks for the recipients to receive their copies of the Bridge in the mail. This lag in delivery could cause members to miss current and/or upcoming events. In order to receive the latest information, we highly recommend that you start receiving an electronic copy of the Bridge each month. It will be sent directly to your E-mail address within one or two days of completion. An electronic copy of the Bridge can also be found online at www.hrcaz.org. The online Bridge, however, is not a copy of the full Bridge, only a subset focusing more on upcoming events. Just click on the ā€œOnline Bridgeā€ menu button for access. We strongly encourage everyone to start using the electronic Bridge which will save time in the long run and provide the most current information within a matter of days instead of weeks.

Just a few friendly reminders...

ā€¢  A variety of information for members can be found on the HRSC website www.hrcaz.org   Just click the menu buttons at the left of most pages.  One of these is a link to the ā€œEvent Scheduleā€ so you can review upcoming events that you may be interested in attending.

ā€¢  In addition to upcoming events, accessing the above website will also provide additional Honeywell-related information.  Click on the ā€œUseful Linksā€ button, then select ā€œJump to Honeywell Dashboardā€ at the top of the page.

ā€¢  Please address any comments or questions about The Bridge to the editor at the HRSC email address Bridge_Editor@hrcaz.org or Honeywell Retiree Social Club, 1860 W.  Rose Garden Lane, Phoenix, AZ 85027-2704.

Scholarships for College

Honeywell Retiree Clubs

Scholarship Foundation

$$$$     FALL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN     $$$$

As cooler temperatures and pumpkin-flavored everything arrives, your Scholarship Board is kicking off its fund raising campaign.  Last year we had twelve qualified recipients, six each from the Honeywell-Garrett and HRSC clubs.

We are very happy to report that the Honeywell-Garrett club, in conjunction with their annual membership drive, received scholarship donations totaling $4,430 from over 80 retirees.  Thank you to everyone who donated!  Our recipients and the Board appreciate your generosity.

** The Scholarship Board would like to propose a challenge to the HRSC retirees to meet or exceed the Honeywell-Garrett donations.  Last year HRSC had individual donations of $725. **

When you donate money to the scholarship fund, think of it as paying it forward by investing in a studentā€™s future. Interestingly, you are also investing in your own future as well. By helping someone afford a college education, you are raising their salary potential and hence the tax base. This is a good thing for everyone - better roads, better schools, better teachers, more doctors just to name a few. Successful, well run communities attract more investment. Not to mention more folks with jobs paying into Social Security and Medicare which is something all retirees are interested in preserving.  Giving makes you feel good, strengthens personal values and shows your children and grandchildren what you care about. Best of all, giving to the Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation means every cent is used for scholarships.

Students receiving our scholarships are all family members of retired Honeywell & Garrett employees. By giving to this program, you will be directly helping the friends and family members of people you worked with for years.

Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes. The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3) so donations should be tax deductible on your state and federal returns (check with your tax advisor).

Applications will be accepted starting December 1 and are due no later than April 1, 2020. If you have a family member who would qualify for our scholarship, please send them an application and encourage them to submit it in a timely manner.  Application forms can be found on our website at www.hrcaz.org. Click on the Scholarships button on the left side of the page.

If you would like to donate at any time throughout our fiscal year, please make your check payable to:  Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation.

You can mail your check, together with the form below, to either of:

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

This monthā€™s featured scholarship recipient is Alayna Roberts.  She is the granddaughter of Paul Bielert of the Honeywell-Garrett Club.

"I received the Honeywell scholarship multiple times during my undergrad career at the University of Arizona. I am so thankful to the committee for helping me and supporting my education. Not only did it allow me to focus more on school, but I felt like I gained some cheerleaders. In May 2019, I graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering and moved to Redding, California. Now, I am a Transportation Engineer for Caltrans and am on track to become certified as a Professional Engineer (a goal Iā€™ve had for 4 years). Thanks again to the Board for giving me these scholarships and helping me graduate."

Watch for more information about each of our Scholarship recipients in future editions of our Club Newsletter.

Ping Golf Club Factory Tour
AAC - Keith Hughes

Oct 31, 2018

On Oct 31st a group of us toured the factory. I know absolutely nothing about golf so I will not embarrass myself with a long description. However the tour for me was fascinating, full of details and over 2 hours long. And you really do walk at least Ā½ a mile.

The facility is their main design and production site with 800 employees out of a worldwide workforce of 1500. We toured everywhere from custom bag manufacturing, putter head milling, assembly of the clubs at various stages, driving range and the vault.

There was some famous PGA player trying out new clubs on a very nice test range. The picture above is the vault with over 3400 gold plated and solid gold putters. Apparently if you win a big championship using Ping clubs they make a gold putter for you and keep a replica in the vault.

We discovered that the next day (Nov 1st) they were introducing a variable length putter to the market. Apparently 80% of players use the wrong length.

This has been a popular event and all three dates (Nov 9th and Nov 29th) are fully booked.

If interested in going on a waiting list for a future date contact keith8411@cox.net.  Please include name, number of tickets, club affiliation and phone number.

Hospice and Palliative Care
HGRC - Mark Steele
Nov 7, 2018

Hospice and Palliative Care was the topic of the Wednesday November 7 meeting of the Honeywell-Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona.

Our featured speaker was Susan Rose, a volunteer with Hospice of the Valley. Hospice is about living the best life you can before dying.
Hospice of Valley
Though known primarily for Hospice and Palliative Care, Hospice of the Valley also operates the White Dove Thrift Shop, and provides both Outreach Palliative Care and a Senior Placement Service.

Palliative Care focuses on the comfort and quality of life with physical, social, psychological and spiritual support for both the patient and the family.

Hospice Care requires a doctorā€™s order to deal with advanced illness with Medicare guidelines of 6 month or less life expectancy, and is covered by Medicare Part A wherever that patient lives. Benefits include medications, medical equipment, oxygen etc. It may also be covered by private insurance. Hospice of the Valley also provides short duration in-patient units, and as a non-profit, no one is refused.

You may keep your current doctor or use a Hospice doctor. Family support includes doctors, nurses, chaplains, social workers, therapists, dietitians and bereavement counselors. Hospice of the Valley has over 2100 volunteers.

Hospice of the Valley, operating in Maricopa and north Pinal County since 1977, has a 24/7 on duty care staff, someone is always there to answer the phone and is one of the largest not-for-profit Hospices in the US. Programs include:

  • Palliative care for dementia
  • Outreach palliative care
  • Pulmonary resource program
  • Bi-cultural care
  • Senior placement service.

There are over 80 Hospice providers in Arizona and most are for-profit. Families have the right to choose, and all it takes is a simple phone call to change providers.

For more information contact on line at HOV.org or call (602) 530-6900.

Giving Back for U.S. Vets, with Honeywell & RTVOS
HRSC - Doug Metzger

Nov 10, 2018

Our community service project this year was working for U.S. Vets, an organization that supports homeless military veterans. As we did last year, we joined Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun (RTVOS), a charitable organization based in Tempe. This was a great opportunity for all our retiree clubs to support those in need in the Valley, while spending quality time with other retirees and active employees.

The project this year was at Grand Veterans, 3400 NW Grand Ave. Phoenix, where U.S. Vets provides temporary and permanent housing for homeless veterans. There was a variety of work, primarily outdoors, upgrading the outdoor community space. Individual projects included things like removing a playground area, adding a patio area, building benches and pergolas, installing BBQs, landscaping, fencing for a dog run, and meditation "space."

The project went very well. We had 11 members from our retiree clubs joining  a hundred or so Honeywell employees. We missed getting a group photo with all of the retirees, but here are some shots and a look at some of the work that was done.

Commemorative Air Force Presentation
HGRC - Mark Steele
Wednesday January 9, 2019

See photos of the meeting at www.garrettretireesaz.com/events.html

The Commemorative Air Force was the topic of the January 9 meeting of the Honeywell-Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona. Members of all Honeywell retiree clubs were welcome.

B-17

Presentation: The Commemorative Air Force, with emphasis on the B-17 bomber, by Dennis Fennessey.

Our intended speaker, Dennis Fennessey, of the Commemorative Air Force was unable to attend the meeting due to an injury received while actually working on one of the aircraft. However, 2 members of the CAF were in attendance and volunteered to provide information and insights.

Scott Reis and Dan Reeder told us that the Arizona Wing of the CAF started in 1980 with the arrival of the B-17G ā€œSentimental Journeyā€. In 1982, the CAF acquired a B-25J ā€œMaid in the Shadeā€ that had sat untouched for 30 years. By 1986, the CAF had 60 members and acquired 9 acres at Falcon Field in Mesa.

The Arizona Wing of the CAF is the largest wing of the CAF which is headquartered in Dallas, TX. Airworthy aircraft at Falcon Field include not only the B-17 and the B25, but also an N2S-3 Stearman, an L-16 Grasshopper, a C-45 Expeditor (Beech Model 18), a C-47 Skytrain (DC3), and an SNJ/T-6 Texan. Non-flightworthy aircraft and other military history items are also part of the exhibit.

Dan Reeder is the Loadmaster for both the B-17 and B-25. As such he is responsible for safety of passengers who pay to fly on these vintage military aircraft.

The club will try to reschedule Dennis Fennessey to provide a more complete presentation. CAF website is www.azcaf.org

Southwest Airlines Maintenance Hangar Tour
AAC - Keith Hughes
Wednesday February 6, 2018

The Bridge

Twenty five club members visited Southwest Airlines for our 5th visit. Each tour is different. This time the parking lot was torn up due to construction of new buildings. We went briefly air side to see where their new hanger is being built. SW is starting ETOPS flights to Hawaii so Phoenix will be their main West Coast maintenance center as California is too expensive.

There was only one aircraft in the hanger today being repaired after lightening made holes in its skin. We had plenty of time to look around the outside but could not go on board this time as they were finishing up repairs. It was fascinating to walk through the parts department and see 1000s of individual parts used for repairs.

Hall of Flame Presentation
HGRC - Mark Steele

Wednesday February 6, 2019

Our featured speaker, Dr. Peter Molloy, presented the evolution of the steam fire engine. A fire engine is a vehicle that pumps water whereas a fire truck carries hoses, ladders and other equipment to support the engine and fire fighters.

The Industrial Revolution (1820-1840) saw the invention of high pressure steam engines and the 1st steam locomotive in England in 1825. John Erikson used a locomotive boiler to power a steam driven water pump in 1829 that delivered 160 gpm. Though used overseas, London refused to use this device and Erikson emigrated to the US where he invented the screw propeller for ships.

At this time US city fire departments were volunteer ethnic gangs competing to fight fires using manual pump engines pulled by the firefighters. A Hodge Engine offered in response to a request by an insurance company in 1841 was able to pump 1300 gpm up to 150 feet, but was not accepted.

In 1852 Cincinnati became the first city fire department to use a Latta Engine with a capacity of 600 gpm.

All engines by this time were horse drawn. The service life for horses pulling steam powered fire engines was about 10 years.

Development of steam powered fire engines continued with the Amoskeag Engine (1860-1900) and the Ahrens Engine in 1870. Over 4000 machines were produced by 14 manufacturers through the early 1900s with capacities of up to 1400 gpm. Note that prior to the installation of high capacity water mains, water sources for fighting fires were rivers, lakes and nearby ponds.

The 1st motorized steam fire engines were produced by American LaFrance and Ahrens-Fox beginning in 1911. Both water tube and fire tube boilers were used in these engines. Water tube boilers required more cleaning of residue on the outside of the tubes, but fire tube boilers had a higher risk of explosion due to lack of water or over pressurization. Boiler explosions were almost always caused by the operator trying get more capacity out of the system.

With the invention of the internal combustion engine, by 1925 there were no more steam powered or horse-drawn fire engines produced.

Examples of these engines and much more can be found at the Hall of Flame Fire Museum, 6101 East Van Buren St. www.hallofflame.org.

The Ping Gold Room is a vault, and yes the putters you see are gold.
Any player that wins a tour event with a Ping putter gets that putter gold plated and one goes in the vault. Any player that wins a Major Tournament gets a solid gold putter and one goes in the vault.

DESCRIPTION OF A PREVIOUS TOUR:

On Nov 29th a group of us toured the factory. I know absolutely nothing about golf so I will not embarrass myself with a long description. However, the tour for me was fascinating, full of details and over 2 hours long. And you really do walk at least 1/2 a mile.

Apparently 80-% of players use the wrong length.

Phoenix Theatre Presentation
HGRC - Mark Steele
Wednesday March 6, 2019

The Phoenix Theatre was the topic of the March 6 meeting of the Honeywell-Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona.

MICHAEL BARNARD (Producing Artistic Director) Phoenix Theatre

Michael Barnard

Phoenix Theatre, formed in 1920, is the oldest arts organization in Arizona. A new building constructed in 1952 placed Phoenix Theatre in the heart of the developing art district which would grow to include Phoenix Art Museum and the Phoenix Library. The organization then embarked on many renovations of the space, culminating in a significant expansion in 2013 led by Michael. This expansion added a glass atrium lobby, additional rehearsal space, and a black box theatre, enhancing the creative vision of the Theatre and expanding programming.

Michael immediately began taking artistic risks when he joined Phoenix Theatre as Producing Artistic Director in 1993. His previous work included serving as Senior Show Director with the Walt Disney Corporation from 1991 to 1999 and as a director for Universal Studios of Osaka, Japan.

With Phoenix Theatre, He reached into the community, offering volunteer services to help charities and nonprofit organizations that could ā€œutilize the arts, to articulate their messageā€. Under his leadership, Phoenix Theatre saw the world premiers
of new works, such as the musical Unbeatable, and advanced an annual Festival of New American Theatre, now entering its 20th year.  The theatre has earned prestigious new work development grants from the Shubert Foundation, Flynn Foundation, Herberger Foundation, Judith Hardes Foundation.

He was named 2009ā€™s Artist of the Year at the Arizona Governorā€™s Arts Awards, received the National Arts and Letters Award for outstanding contribution to the field of Musical Theatre in 2011, and in 2015, received both the Leadership in Arts Award from th
e YWCA and the Arts Leader Award from the Phoenix Boys Choir.

During his presentation, he gave the following history of the Phoenix Theatre:

Established in 1920 as the ā€˜Phoenix Playersā€™, Margret Bartlett Heard became the president of the ā€˜Phoenix Little Theaterā€™ and her coach house was the location in 1923. In continuous operation since its beginning, the now named ā€œPhoenix Theatre" is the 6th oldest continuing operating theatre in the United Sates.

In 1951 Margret Heard left land to the City of Phoenix for a 100 year lease for the theatre. This land is now also the site for the Phoenix Art Museum and the Phoenix Library. During its existence, the Shadegg, Herberger and Goldwater were all connected with, and played major roles in, the theatreā€™s success.

In 1936, Clare Booth Luce premiered the play ā€˜The Womenā€™ at the theater. During WWII, The theatre operated as a venue for USO productions. L. Ron Hubbard in the 1950ā€™s rented the theatre and gave his 1st speech on Scientology. Steven Spielberg began his career at the Phoenix Theatre building props. At age 17 in 1964, the Theatre was the site of the first ever showing of a Spielberg film.

In the late 1980s the now named ā€˜Phoenix Theatre Companyā€™ joined Actors Equity, allowing the Company to produce their own work. Of note: all the shops required to produce presentations are housed in the same building as the three stages seating 380, 210 and 100 respectively.

Since its inception nearly 100 years ago, the Phoenix Theatre has hosted 1030 productions. The Theatre produces 10 or 11 shows yearly. It is now the developer of new works. On April 3 on the main stage, Phoenix Theatre Company will be hosting the world premier of ā€œSisters in Lawā€, a play based on Linda Hirshman's book about the relationship between polar opposites and modern-day legends, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day Oā€™Connor.

Phoenix Theatre Company is located at 1825 N Central Avenue, Phoenix and also hosts an Art Bar and Bistro on the site.

Guide Dogs of the Desert Presentation

HGRC - Mark Steele

Wednesday April 3, 2019

See photos of the meeting at www.garrettretireesaz.com/events.html

Our featured speaker was Lori Murphy, a 17-year volunteer with Guide Dogs of the Desert, and she was joined by 3 other volunteers, 3 black Labrador Retrievers and 1 standard poodle. Guide Dogs of the Desert, a 501-c3 organization, custom trains guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired. A yearly calendar is one source of funds.

In addition to training, they also have an in-house breeding program. Dogs are selected for both brains and temperament. Most are Labs but some poodles are used as they are smaller and non-allergenic.

The volunteers at the meeting were all puppy raisers. Puppy raisers must apply to be selected to the program. Puppies are between 8-12 weeks old and 8-12 weeks are required to train each puppy. The puppies must be medically sound and housebroken, and the trainers are responsible for teaching basic obedience, house manners, and socializations at grocery stores, restaurants, public transit etc. Dogs are never fed by hand ā€“ only from bowls. The school, located in Palm Springs, CA, owns the dogs throughout training. After puppy training, the dogs go to California for an additional 3-9 months learning how to pull on harnesses, deal with elevation changes, traffic, overhangs, etc. to be fully capable of providing the required guidance for their eventual owner. Some dogs are not suitable for guide work but there are 3-5 partner organizations that will train those dogs for other tasks.

Upon completion of training, the dogs are paired with a visually impaired person based on application data that facilitates matching the person with the dog. Potential new owners undergo 28 days of training with a 40% graduation rate. There is ongoing support after graduation.

There are about 300 active dogs throughout the US and internationally. The current waiting list for dogs is between 50 and 75. 100 puppies are currently being raised and trained. And there are 30 breeder dogs in the program.

HGRC - Dolf Strom
Wednesday, September 4, 2019
Location:  Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N Granite Reef Road  (Just north of McDowell)

Report from HGRC President Dolf Strom:

Our featured speaker, Tim Mahoney, President and CEO, Honeywell Aerospace, brought in 75 members, almost a full room.

At the start of the meeting after hearing an impassioned plea by me for a volunteer to fill the Vice President position, Tim threw out a challenge to the group. If someone volunteered for Vice President he would double the Honeywell scholarship foundation donation from $4000 to $8000. Glenn Orgeron stepped up. Glenn was our prior treasurer and is a financial guy. He said that $4000 was too much to not get so now we have a Vice President. Thanks Tim and Glenn.

Tim then presented his annual Honeywell-Garrett State of Honeywell Aerospace with emphasis on the former Garrett divisions.

2018 business results showed $15.5B in sales with a 22.6% margin. Margin in Q2 was 26%. Honeywell is on the right platforms with aftermarket up >81%. Even the defense sector is growing with both refurbishment and technology insertion. Minneapolis has significantly ramped up production of inertial systems.

Aerospace continues to have an unprecedented completion win rate: Avionics ā€“ 6.3x competitors; APU ā€“ 1.9x; Mechanical Systems ā€“ 1.8x; Engines ā€“ won every competition.

Expected market growth:

Since 1959 Honeywell has produced 100,000 APUs and 72,000 engines.

Growth and new technology areas include 3D printing for low volume spares, robotic final inspections for APUs, spherical motors, hybrid electric turbogenerators for small general aviation, autonomous urban air mobility vehicles, CLEEN next gen turbofan, advanced APU, high cooling capacity vapor cycle ECS and rotorcraft automated component tracking.

When asked, Tim noted that the 737MAX is a mess with other national regulatory agencies being involved. Current trade wars can have a significant impact specifically Mexico ($1250M at risk) and now issues with Turkeyā€”a key component in our external supply chain.

The Octoberfest was enjoyed by all.  Lots of good food and many take-home boxes for a late dinner I suppose.

Our service project this year will be helping out the Boys and Girls clubs of Metro Phoenix. As we have for the last two years, we will be joining Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun(RTVOS), a charitable organization based in Tempe. This year's event will take place on Saturday, December 14. We will work from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Jerry Colangelo Branch at 1755 N. 34th Ave in Phoenix. Water and lunch will be provided. And T-shirts for all!

There will be a variety of projects, including painting, landscaping, assembling gaming tables, designing a library reading space, and building a LEGO wall. You may also bring along family members aged 14 or older to volunteer.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix offer affordable after-school and summer programs for 27,000+ students in grades K-12, empowering young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible members of our community.

This is a great opportunity for all our retiree clubs to improve our community while spending quality time with other retirees and active employees. Our project last year had around 100 volunteers, including current employees and retirees. The pictures here are from last yearā€™s project in support of homeless military veterans near Grand Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix.

Volunteer check-in at the event will start at 7:30. The deadline for signing up will be Saturday, November 16. If you are at all interested, or have any questions, contact Doug Metzger at doug.metzger@cox.net or 602-319-6637, and weā€™ll get you more information as soon as it comes along. Weā€™ll be looking for commitments and official sign-ups sometime in October or November.

Arizona Falls

G. R. Herberger Park, 56th Street and Indian School Road

AZ Falls
                                                          1 AZ Falls 2

Arizona Falls, formed by a natural 20-foot drop along the Arizona Canal between what is now 56th and 58th street, reopened in June 2003 as a restored hydroelectric plant and neighborhood gathering place where visitors can learn, interact and reflect.

The new Arizona Falls combines art, histroy and technology toi generate clean electricity from the canal's waterfall.

Features

The site showcases the Phoenix Art Commissionā€™s "Water Works at Arizona Falls" project, designed by renowned Boston artists Lajos Heder and Mags Harries. The main entrance is on the south side; a footbridge connects the north bank to the viewing platform.

Visitors, surrounded by water on three walls in the water room, may sit on large boulders as they enjoy the cool and soothing sounds of flowing water.

Through sheets of flowing water, the antique gears used in the original hydroelectric plant can be seen. Two aqueducts frame the room to create the feeling of being inside the historic waterfall. A shade structure covers stone block seats near a pool of water, allowing visitors to enjoy the experience year-round.

Where:

G.R. Herberger Park, 56th Street and Indian School Road.

Meet at the power plant at 10.30am. People can hike or bike and then lunch and tour the plant at their leisure.

Southwest Airlines Maintenance Hangar Tour

AAC - Keith Hughes

Wednesday, April 15, 2020, 10:00 am

SW Plane 2

Several members have requested this tour again so here goes. This is a unique opportunity to tour Southwest Airlines Maintenance Facility at Sky Harbor Airport. You may be able to walk through an aircraft and sit in the cockpit then tour the maintenance and operation areas in a two hour guided tour. You will find out why the first aircraft were painted those colors, how the fit an aircraft that is too big into the hanger and maybe debate the correct part numbers of the APS we see in the stores. Last year we sat in an aircraft only 5 flight hours old and not yet entered service. Yes it had the new aircraft smell. This free tour is planned for Wednesday, April 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. but names of all attendees are required in advance for security purposes. This will be our fourth tour and spaces fill quickly. I have to limit the group to 40 for practical reasons.

To register send the full names of all in your party to Keith Hughes at keith8411@cox.net or call 623-825-5243 for details.
